Now that many of us are teachers or have our own classrooms, we have accumulated years of sage advice and countless classroom resources. I know of many teachers who have file cabinets and closets filled with worksheets, manipulatives, and other teaching materials that they have tirelessly created so that the students in their classrooms can be successful. As many schools and districts are suggesting a change in teaching practices and moving away from traditional pencil and paper practices and instead embedding 21st Century skills into the curriculum, it can be overwhelming to think of having to write new lesson plans and develop new resources to meet these demands. It is at these times that we often turn to our friend Google to see if any resources have been posted online that we might be able to use (or adapt) for our classroom. Although there are a plethora of resources available, not every result that displays for your Google keyword search will be relevant. So what is a solution for finding quality, successful, teacher-tested resources? TeachersPayTeachers.
As many are still waiting to see the economy start to turn around, it has been difficult for some families to make ends meet. Teachers all over spend countless hours planning, instructing, grading, collaborating, mentoring, and counseling every day. Though many of these aspects of teaching are not written into a job description or contract, they come with the job and I believe this is why many of us have chosen to become teachers. It is not about the money or the summers off, but rather a desire to share our knowledge, experiences, love of being with kids, and make an impact on the lives of many. I am sure many of us can pick out a teacher from our own schooling experience that has made a difference in our life or that we still remember to this day. I can think of two teachers from my elementary days - Mrs. K and Mrs. S. Out of all my elementary years I remember those grades and teachers because I was able to make a connection with them and they made learning fun and engaging. At the time did I like Phonics or math? Not at all. It was the way that they taught it though that helped make things "stick" and leaving me wanting to learn more. Were the lessons they taught successful, meaningful, and relevant. You bet. So what is a solution for finding quality, successful, teacher-tested resources? TeachersPayTeachers. TeachersPayTeachers is an online marketplace where teachers can register and sell their lesson plans and teaching resources online. So why would you want to buy a lesson plan when there are so many that are available for free on the Internet? Most of the lesson plans are posted by other teachers such as you - people who want to share their successful well-constructed lesson plans, worksheets, assessments with others (and maybe make a few extra dollars in the process!). I personally have been a member of TeachersPayTeachers for a couple of years and have been thrilled with the people that I have been able to connect with and help integrate technology into their curriculum using resources I have created. Many of us teachers have probably spent countless hours developing resources that we end up becoming emotionally attached to not only because of the time spent developing, but also the positive and successful results that we see with our students. In the difficult times we are facing with the state of the economy, a little supplemental income would also be welcome by just about everybody. So if you are interested in turning some of your hard work into some additional money, take a moment to explore TeachersPayTeachers. If you are satisfied with your experience, feel free to refer your friends, colleagues, or PLN members as well!
