Spelling City

I recently discovered the site Spelling City after reading a post at iLearn Technology about 15 Tools to Help You Go Paperless.  Spelling City allows you to create a teacher account where you can create spelling activities based on your set of spelling words.  They offer a Premium membership in which you can create student accounts under your teacher account, but the basic account provides many useful features.

Spelling City is very easy to use and would be a great way to post spelling activities on your teacher web site for students to practice in the computer lab or at home.  To create a spelling list:
  1. Create a Spelling City account or log in if you are an existing user.  To create an account, click on the Register link in the upper right-hand corner of the page (under the sign-in boxes).
  2. Click on the List Management link in the Teacher Toolbox in the upper right-hand corner of the page.  When the List Management page opens, click the Create a New List link.
  3. Enter your spelling words on the list.  Press Enter after each word to go to the next line.
  4. Select the desired Word Order and if you would like the list published or not.  Select to have it published if you would like to link your list on another page (such as your teacher web page).  Press the Save button.
  5. You will then be directed to your spelling list.  Below your list of words will be three buttons - Test Me, Teach Me, Play a Game.
  6. Once you make your selection for testing, teaching, or games, copy the URL in your address bar and then paste it on your web site or other place for students to easily access the spelling test, lesson, or game.
When creating a list of words, an audio version of the word is automatically generated as well as an audio clip of a sentence using the word.  Built in accommodations - nice!  Another nice feature of Spelling City is that several of the games are available online or in print versions, giving you flexibility in how you choose to use the activities (or if your students do not have computer access).  You may also access the List Management screen at any time to edit your list of words or choose a different activity.  So many great features for practicing spelling all in one place!
